How do I go about scheduling a training session on an instrument or piece of equipment?
A. If you haven’t already, please register for an account on our Instrument Reservation Site.  Once you have registered and logged in, you will find yourself on your account’s Dashboard, this page will notify you of your upcoming reservations along with any announcements pertaining to the status of the instrumentation.  Click on the Schedule link located on the top bar, this will take you to the current week’s schedule, broken out by day.  From here you will notice that each instrument or piece of equipment has a separate entry line for reservations, and an additional there is an entry line to reserve Heather’s or Prem’s time as well.

To reserve a time for training, select an open time (any time that is in white is open) with Heather or Prem at a day and time that works for you and click on the corresponding box.  This will take you to the “Create a new reservation” page; from here you can set the duration of your time (we recommend 2-3 hours) and give a brief description of the training you would like (i.e. confocal training, SEM training, etc.).  Once you have created your reservation, you will need to email whoever you booked your training with in order for us to reserve the instrument or piece of equipment.  NOTE: Reserving time with us does NOT reserve the instrument nor does it guarantee the availability of the instrument.  Until you have had training, we are the only ones who can reserve instrumentation for you hence the reason you must email us as soon as you reserve time.

Do I need to bring anything with me to my training session?
A. The only item we require for you to complete before your training session is the “New User” form.  We encourage you to NOT bring your own samples for training.  We have a variety of samples that we use for training.  These samples are specifically chosen to demonstrate the capabilities of the instrument.  If you are interested in reading more about an instrument or a specific technique, please let us know we can easily direct you to literature on the subject.
What is the cost of training?
A.  There is no cost for training, as long as you are using our samples to practice.  We also do not have a limit on the duration of your training, as long as you are not over occupying the microscope.  Remember this is a shared user facility.
How many people can attend a training session?
A.  We recommend only ONE person at a time attend training sessions.  Since we do hands on training, it is very difficult for more than one person to have the proper time to practice on the microscope during sessions.
How far out in advance can I reserve your time or an instrument?
A. There is no limit to how far in advance you reserve an instrument or time with MAI Staff.  We only ask that you don’t over reserve the equipment (for example, reserving the instrument everyday straight for two weeks).  Remember that this is a shared user facility.
What are the operational hours of your facility?
A. There is usually a member of the MAI Staff available in the lab Monday through Friday, from 8am to 5pm.  The lab is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to those who qualify for after-hours usage.
I would like to use the instruments at night, is this possible?
A. Yes, we encourage experienced users to the use the facility in the evenings and on weekends, with reduced rates.  We require all users who would like after hours access to book an after-hours training session with either Heather or Prem.  This training only requires 15-30 minutes of your time.  NOTE: after hours access is only for experienced users, especially in the case of the electron microscopes.
Does your lab perform fee for service work, specifically for commercial entities?
A. Yes, we do perform fee for service work.  Due to Comptroller restrictions we cannot offer a rate per sample, we are strictly on an hourly fee structure.  If you are a commercial entity, a service agreement must be signed before any work can be done, please contract Heather for more information.
